Norma Johnson

Norma Johnson, 92,

formerly of Minot, Surrey

and Carpio died on No-

vember 5, 2019 in a Har-

vey nursing home follow-

ing a six year struggle

with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Norma Henrietta Bitter

was born on September 3,

1927 in Carpio, North

Dakota to William and

Frances (Arnott) Bitter.

She was raised and edu-

cated in Carpio and gra-

duated from Carpio High

School in 1945. She con-

tinued her education at

Minot Business College

and Minot State Teachers

College. As a young adult

she taught rural school for

two years prior to working

as a teletype setter and

operator at the Minot Dai-

ly News for nine years.

She continued in this oc-

cupation at the Honolulu

Advertiser in Hawaii and

at Press Enterprise in

Riverside CA during a two

year period.

Norma married Ray-

mond L. Johnson Jr. on

September 29, 1963 in

Deering, ND. They made

their home in Riverside,

CA for several years and

Deering for a short time

before building a home

and moving to Surrey in

1970. They moved to

Minot in 1990. During

this time Norma taught pi-

ano for fifteen years and

was employed as a sales

person at Sears for five

years. Raymond was em-

ployed as a custodial en-

gineer at the Surrey

School and with the

Minot Public Schools at

Magic City Campus. Also,

he was the minister at the

Church of the Brethren in

Surrey (13 years) and

several other churches in-

cluding First Baptist

Church in Glenburn. Nor-

ma retired in 1993. Ray

died on August 17, 2003.

Most recently, Norma had

been a resident of the

Maddock Memorial Home

for one year and the St.

Aloisius Nursing Home in

Harvey for six years.

Norma was an active

member of the Church of

the Brethren – Surrey and

more recently was a regu-

lar attendee of the Bible

Fellowship Church-Minot

where she participated in

the Church Women Unit-

ed organization and Bible

Study groups. Also, she

was a member of the St.

Joseph’s Hospital Auxili-

ary. Norma especially en-

joyed camping, knitting,

crocheting, quilting, sing-

ing and playing piano and

organ.

Norma is survived by

her children: Bradley

Johnson of Maddock, Bri-

an (Colette) Johnson of

Minot and Bottineau, Bar-

ry (Lucy) Johnson of

Wisconsin Rapids, WI and

Bert (Lyndi) Johnson of

Greagle, CA; thirteen

grandchildren, ten great

grandchildren and several

nieces, nephews and

cousins.

Norma was preceded in

death by her parents, hus-

band and sisters: Elsie

June Grilley and Irma

Omoth.

Celebration of the Life

of Norma Johnson: Mon-

day, November 18, 2019

at 1:00 p.m. in the Bible

Fellowship Church –

Minot.

Interment will be in

Rosehill Memorial Park,

Minot.

Visitation: Sunday, No-

vember 17, 2019 from

1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in

Thomas Family Funeral

Home – Minot.
