Vernon Helm, 86, Har-
vey, ND died Monday Oc-
tober 7, 2019 at the St.
Aloisius Hospital, Harvey.
Funeral services will be
at 10:30 a.m. Saturday Oc-
tober 12 at St. Cecilia
Catholic Church, Harvey,
ND.
Visitation will be from 4
p.m. to 7 p.m. with a
Prayer Service beginning
at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oc-
tober 11 at the Hertz Fun-
eral Home, Harvey, ND.
Burial will be in the North
Dakota Veterans
Cemetery, Mandan on
Monday, Oct. 14 at 11
a.m.
Vernon Ervin Helm was
born on May 15, 1933
near Coal Mine Lake
south of Martin, ND. He
was the son of Ervin and
Wilhelmina “Minnie”
(Reichenberger) Helm. At
the age of 12 Vern moved
with his family to a farm
in Berlin Township. He
attended rural school. As
a young man he helped
his father with the family
farming operation.
Vern married Delores
Muscha on October 6,
1953 in Harvey. They
lived and farmed south of
Martin. He enlisted in the
Army in 1954 and was
stationed in Hawaii. His
wife and son Doug joined
him there in 1955. He was
honorably discharged in
1956 and the family re-
turned to a farm south of
Martin.
He farmed there for 27
years. Vern also worked
on various jobs for the
Sheridan County ACS of-
fice. He helped organize
SHERCO Trucking, a Na-
tional Farming Organiza-
tion Coop and serviced
the trucks.
They moved to Harvey
in 1986. He began work-
ing at the Harvey Golf
Course and was head
groundskeeper for many
years. Vern and Delores
established and managed
the Penny Pinchers Store
in Harvey. He attended
many auction sales in
search of merchandise for
the store. He also drove
school bus for Martin and
Harvey schools for 26
years.
Vernon was an avid
hunter and outdoorsman.
He built a hunting cabin
on his land called the
Prairie Sunset Inn. He
planted trees, raised
pheasants and practiced
conservation and game
management.
Vernon was a member
of the St. Cecilia Catholic
Church and served as a
trustee and on the church
council. He helped with
several church renova-
tions. He also served on
the Martin Township
Board; Martin School
Board; was a member of
Oswald Wohl VFW Post
in Anamoose; and the
Knights of Columbus
Council; Wells Eagles
Aerie 3080, Rural Fire
Department all of Harvey.
In 1965 He was recog-
nized as the Jaycees
“Outstanding Farmer of
The Year” and in 1979 he
received the Soil Conser-
vation Award in Sheridan
County.
Vernon is survived by:
his wife, Delores, of Har-
vey; son, Doug (Toni) of
Harvey; daughters, Leilani
(Paul) Bienek and Karla
(Earl) Snyder all of
Bismarck; 6 grandchil-
dren, Ronda Meyer,
Cheryl Helm, Lindsey
Tooley, Shannon Knut-
son, Christi Beauchamp
and Brandon Snyder; 14
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in
death by: his parents;
granddaughter, Jessica
Helm; sisters, Eunice
Opp, Marlene Hauser, Lil-
lian Breckel, Lois Stuber;
brother, Glen Helm.
