George Smetana

George A. Smetana, 76,

of Garrison, ND passed

away on August 31, 2019,

at St. Alexus hospital in

Bismarck, ND of cancer.

Cremation has taken place

and services will be held

at a later date. Internment

of ashes will follow at

Lansford, ND.

George was born on No-

vember 23, 1943 in Minot,

ND to Albert and Ger-

trude (Schumacher) Sme-

tana. He was raised on

the family farm at Lans-

ford and graduated from

Lansford high school in

1961. After high school,

he worked as a hod carrier

on the building of the St.

John Catholic church in

Lansford. George then left

and joined Northwest

Orient Airlines as a

ground crew technician.

He started his 37 year

career in New York City at

Idlewild airport and

worked at various airports

around the country before

settling in Seattle, WA.

where he retired. Follow-ing retirement, George

moved to Garrison, ND

with his wife Carolyn.

He was married to Clara

Bird and had one child,

Kari. They later divorced

and he married Carolyn

Hanson in Seattle in 1997.

Carolyn passed away

2015.

He is survived by: his

daughter and two

grandchildren, Tyler and

Jordan Carlson. He is also

survived by two brothers,

Allan (Lynnell) Smetana

and Paul (Nadia) Smetana

along with numerous

nieces and nephews. He

leaves behind two close

friends in Dennis Ness

and Fr. Basil Alwell both

of Garrison.

George was preceded in

death by: his parents,

grandparents, his wife,

Carolyn, and his sister,

Janice Snorteland.
