Raphael “Ray” Joseph

Hagel of Owatonna, MN,

formerly of Minot and

Dunseith, ND, passed

away Friday, May 31,

2019.

Ray was born March 13,

1931, the son of John and

Magdalena (Degenstein)

Hagel, in Orrin, ND, and

was raised and educated

in Orrin and Snohomish,

WA.

Ray enlisted in the Un-

ited States Army on

February 29, 1952. He

proudly served his coun-

try during the Korean

War. He was honorably

discharged on November

30, 1953 and was in the

Army Reserves until 1960.

Ray married Lois Miller

in Harvey, ND on August

4, 1953. He also began his

career as a Depot Agent

with the Great Northern

Railroad in 1953, which

led to numerous homes

for the Hagel family in-

cluding Bremen, Dunseith

and Minot, ND.

Ray was a member of

the Elks, Moose and Ea-

gles Fraternal Organiza-

tions, the American Le-

gion and the Knights of

Columbus Fourth Degree.

He enjoyed golf, fishing,

camping and following

the Minnesota Twins, and

was an armchair quarter-

back for the Minnesota

Vikings. Upon retirement

after 42 years with the

railroad, Ray and Lois

spent time in Mesa, AZ

where he enjoyed golfing,

friends and warmer

weather. It is rumored

that Ray got his first “offi-

cial” hole in one while on

a golf course in Arizona.

Ray is survived by his

five children, Curtis (Do-

die) Hagel, Omaha, NE,

LaRae (Frank) Evans,

Owatonna, MN, David

Hagel, Dunseith, ND, Den-

ise (Terry) Marback, De-

vils Lake, ND, and Ra-

chelle (Darrell) Peltier,

Wasilla, AK; sister, Irene

(Benny) Feist, Minot, ND;

nine grandchildren,

Aaron Peltier, Ashley Pel-

tier, Amber Peltier, Aman-

da (Matt) Larson, Katie

(Jeff) Edel, Jacquelyn

Evans, Bryce (Chelsea)

Marback, Elise Marback

and Raya Hagel; and

seven

great-grandchildren, An-

thony Young, Brady Lar-

son, Blake Larson, Camer-

yn Edel, McKenna Edel,

Tristen Peltier, Ethan Pel-

tier and Joseph Marback;

sisters-in-law, Katie

Hagel, Minot, ND,

Eleanor Hagel, Redmond,

WA and Marlys Schimke,

Bismarck, ND.

Ray was preceded in

death by his parents; his

wife Lois, infant daughter

Ann Marie, and eleven

brothers and sisters.
