91, Minot, ND, passed
away Monday, April 8,
2019, at Maple View
Memory Care.
Marlys Jeanette Hagen
was born on April 4,
1928, the daughter of Mel-
vin and Jenny (Nelson)
Hagen, in rural Hamberg,
ND. She was raised on the
family farm near Bremen,
ND, and attended a rural
public school until the
8th grade. She then went
to high school in New
Rockford and graduated
from Maddock Agricultur-al School.
Marlys received her
Standard Teaching Certifi-cate from Minot State
Teachers College. She
taught two years in a rural
school. While teaching,
Marlys met Fred Koenig
through his niece, Lillian.
Marlys and Fred were
married in 1949. They
took over the family farm
by Manfred. Marlys and
Fred were blessed with
three daughters. She was
also once married to Sher-
man Welstad.
After retiring, Marlys
moved to Minot. During
her retirement, she trav-
eled to Norway, Hawaii,
Nashville, Branson and
she spent her winters in
Arizona. She liked to at-
tend the Norske Hostfest
and the concerts.
Marlys was involved
with the Manfred Com-
munity Homemakers Club
where she learned many
crafts with her friends.
She was a member of the
First Baptist Church in
Fessenden, and then
joined St. Mark’s Lutheran
Church when she moved
to Minot.
Marlys was a wonderful
baker. She baked buns,
bread, caramel rolls and
kuchen. She enjoyed gar-
dening in her huge veget-
able garden, canning,
reading, word search puz-
zles, crocheting doilies,
knitting and sewing. She
spent many hours sewing
clothes for her girls. She
even sewed each of their
wedding gowns. Marlys
loved her family and
spending time with them
all. She especially enjoyed
teaching her grandchil-
dren new things.
Everywhere Marlys
went, she made lasting
friends.
Her loving family in-
cludes: Daughters, Shirley
Freeze, Murfreesboro, TN,
Frances (Ken) Kostad,
Minot, ND and Connie
(Richard) Oasheim, Ca-
valier, ND; grandchildren,
Darrell Freeze, Troy
Freeze, Ryan Freeze, Tif-
fany Freeze, Jennifer
Beswick, Lynn Miller, El-
liot Oasheim, Jared
Oasheim and Stephanie
Haman; 17 great-grand-
children; brother, Delmer
Hagen, Sheyenne, ND; sis-
ter, Diane (Edward) Brat-
vold, Inver Grove Heights,
MN; sister-in-law, Darla
Hagen; and numerous
nieces and nephews also
survive.
She was preceded in
death by her parents, Mel-
vin and Jenny Hagen; hus-
band, Fred Koenig; broth-
ers, Virgil Hagen, and
Sherman Hagen; son-in-
law, Darrell Freeze; and
sister-in-law, LaVonne
Hagen.
Funeral: Saturday,
April 13, 2019, at 11:00
a.m. at St. Mark’s Luth-
eranChurch, Minot.
Interment: Hillside
Cemetery, Fessenden, ND.
Visitation: Saturday one
hour prior to the service
at the church.
