Eldryce Hansen

Aug.3, 1930-Sept. 19, 2017

Eldryce Hansen, 87,

Deering, ND, passed away

Tuesday, September 19,

2017, in a Velva care

center.

Eldryce Caroline Marie

Hansen was born on Au-

gust 3, 1930 to Alfred and

Mabel (Evenson) Hatley,

the third of six children.

She graduated from Deer-

ing High School, and

eloped to Sidney, Monta-

na to marry Oliver (Todd)

Hansen on June 14, 1947.

They began their married

life together living with

Oliver’s father, Detlef

Hansen, until a fire

burned the house and

tragically, Detlef lost his

life. Oliver and Eldryce,

with their small daughter

LaVonne moved to a farm-

stead one mile south of

Deering where they

farmed and raised cattle,

and had four more chil-

dren. Eldryce helped sup-

plement the family in-

come by raising pigs,

chickens, eggs, and bottle

fed calves, as well as the

family garden.

Eldryce worked the

fields until the kids got

older, when she was able

to be an at home farm

wife. Eldryce loved her

yard and flowers. She got

on the tractor and cul-

tivated the entire yard

around the house, putting

in dozens of flower beds

with grass paths sur-

rounding them. Eldryce

and Jeanette Varberg en-

tered the Surrey Flower

Show and Eldryce won

several awards, as well as

a traveling trophy for her

snapdragons. She was a

charter member of the

Deering Pedal Pushers,

and along with her

friends, spent many hours

planting and nurturing

flowers and trees in Deer-

ing.

As good as she was

with flowers; she could

NOT take a picture! In

trying to take the first day

of school pictures of the

kids by the flower beds,

she would be so excited

her hands would tremble.

Pictures were almost al-

ways blurry or she cut the

heads off in the photo.

Todd and Eldryce had

their fun in the winter,

bowling with John and

Barbara Wright on two

leagues in Minot. They

also went on hunting trips

to Montana and Canada

with the Wrights and the

Ericksons.

Eldryce had published

works in the Dakota Farm-

er. She wrote an article

entitled “I Remember

Father” about her child-

hood riding a wagon bus

driven by her father

Alfred. A blizzard came

up that was so bad, Alfred

let go of the reigns and

trusted the horses to take

them home.

Eldryce was always up

for any challenge. At the

age of 53 she got her nurs-

ing degree. She was in-

strumental in the start-up

of the Deering Communi-

ty Betterment Club and

was president of the Deer-

ing School Board, and

handed diplomas to her

grandchildren, Todd and

Brandie. In the mid-80s

she developed the Deering

Mobile Estates which was

instrumental in adding

available housing in the

area. She traveled to Ger-

many with her daughter

Cindy to meet her first

great grandchild, Paul in

1992.

After Todd died on De-

cember 5, 1993, Eldryce

moved into the new house

at the farm with her moth-

er Mabel. Eldryce worked

as an LPN at Trinity Hos-

pital, and eventually re-

tired after 15 years. She

then cared for her mother

until Mabel’s death in

1996. Eldryce then did

some traveling to Hawaii,

Branson, Washington (to

see her sister in law Betty

Lane) and took in an

Alaskan Cruise, spending

some time with a

seasoned Alaskan fisher-

woman. She took a great

excursion with Carolyn

Tandberg where they saw

the fall colors of the

Northeast.

Eldryce always tried to

be a help to Elliot on the

farm. In between garden-

ing and functions, she

would help move equip-

ment, take lunch, and had

fun on the farm with her

grandsons, Brooks and

MacKenzie

Eventually, time took

its toll, and Eldryce en-

tered Edgewood Vista Re-

tirement home in 2010,

and then the Souris Val-

ley Care Center in Velva,

ND.
