Ethel Hegstad

Ethel Hegstad, 88,
Powers Lake, went to be
with the Lord, Friday, Au-
gust 25, 2017 in a Tioga
nursing home. She
passed away peacefully
surrounded by her family.
Mary Ethel Hegstad was
born on June 15, 1929 in
Williston, the daughter of
Jack and Mary (Hammer)
Pankowski. She attended
school in Fairview, Tren-
ton and Williston where
she graduated from
Williston High School in
1947. Shortly before gra-
duation she began work as
a secretary to the superin-tendent of Williston
Schools. Ethel met Philip
Hegstad at Baptist Youth
Camp and was united in
marriage to him on June
20, 1948 in Williston.
For a few years they
lived in Williston where
she worked as a secretary
and bookkeeper. They
then moved to the family
farm at Powers Lake
where they raised their
family. In 1968, Ethel
started her career as the
clerk of Powers Lake Pub-
lic Schools. Philip passed
away on November 21,
2000. Ethel was a very
active member of Bethel
Baptist Church in Powers
Lake where she served as
a clerk, secretary and
taught Sunday school.
She served on local and
state Christian Education
Boards, represented North
Dakota Baptist Women at
their national assembly
and served as a state off-
icer. She was a member of
the Good Neighbors
Homemakers Club, Red
Hat Society and Sons of
Norway. She enjoyed
square dancing, golfing,
crocheting and rosmaling.
She was an excellent
seamstress who sewed her
children’s clothing, made
draperies and did uphol-
stery work. Most of all,
Ethel cherished spending
time with her family. May
God Bless her memory
among us.

her sons, Eugene (Judy) of
Powers Lake, David (Jen-
ny) of Ishpeming, MI,
Clifton of Idaho and John
Daniel (Stephanie) of
Bismarck; daughters, Di-
ane Skjervem (Bob) of
Powers Lake and Debbie
Braaten (Garland) of
Powers Lake; 17
grandchildren; 28
great-grandchildren, 2
great-great-grandchildren;
brothers, Tom Pankowski
of Great Falls, MT and
Ron Pankowski (Harriet)
of Port Angeles, WA; sis-
ter, Millie Mathis of Kel-
so, WA; brothers-in-law,
Glen Hegstad (Ardie) of
Orange City, IA and Gene
Nice of Williston and
several nieces, nephews
and cousins.
She was preceded in
death by: her parents;
husband; daughter, Judy
Marie; brothers, Philip,
Paul and Lawrence; and
sisters, Shirley Nice and
Gloria McLaughlin.
Funeral: Wednesday,
August 30, 2017 at 11:00
am in Bethel Baptist
Church, Powers Lake.
Visitation: Tuesday,
August 29, 2017 from
noon – 6:00 pm in
Springan Funeral Home,
Stanley.
Interment: Bethel Bap-
tist Cemetery, Powers
Lake.
