Sherman Welstad
Sherman Welstad, 99,
Minot, passed away
peacefully with family
members present on
Wednesday, Nov. 25,
2015, at Trinity Homes in
Minot.
Sherman Welstad was
born Feb. 4, 1916, the
son of Hans and Mabel
(Borreson) Welstad, in
Bottineau County, near
Russell. He was raised on
the family farm and edu-
cated at Pratt Township
Country School, where
he completed the eighth
grade in six years. Sher-
man graduated from
Russell High School in
1932 at the age of 16.
Sherman then furthered
his education by attend-
ing college at Bottineau
and later at the University
of Washington for a time.
He came home to farm
and bought his first piece
of land in Deep River
Township in 1938. Sher-
man later sold that land
and in 1943 purchased a
farm in Pratt Township
where the home farm is
located.
Sherman was united in
marriage to Violet D.
Glinz on Jan. 15, 1943.
He worked with the
Mouse River Soil Conser-
vation District and plant-
ed many shelter belts on
his land. He was award-
ed the Soil Conservation
Award in 1960. He had
always been interested in
new farming methods
and was often the first in
the area to put them to
practice. He was also
mechanically inclined.
His favorite hobby was to
work in his shop. Violet
passed away Sept. 6,
1993.
He was a member of St.
Olaf and Bethlehem Lu-
theran churches where he
held several offices. He
was also a member of St.
Mark’s Lutheran Church
in Minot and St. Luke’s
Lutheran Church in
Mesa, Ariz. He was cur-
rently a member of Our
Savior Lutheran Church
in Minot. He was on the
Upham Elevator Board,
FHA Board, Farmers Un-
ion Oil Company Board
at Newburg and the Agri-
cultural Improvement As-
sociation where he was
one of the first directors
in forming the associa-
tion.

cludes: children, Glenn
(Donna) Welstad, Post
Falls, Idaho, Tom (Lee-
Ann) Welstad, Bedford,
Wyo., Shirley (Myron)
Thompson, Minot, Blaine
(Marlene) Welstad, New-
burg, and Mary (Pat) Hol-
brook, Stillwater, Minn.;
14 grandchildren; 40
great-grandchildren; four
great-great-grandchildren;
brother, Roy (Yvonne)
Welstad, Sublimity, Ore.;
and numerous nieces and
nephews.
Sherman was preced-
ed in death by: his
parents; wife, Violet; sis-
ter, Ilene Buchholz;
brothers, Harold and
Lloyd; great-grandson,
Karson Welstad; great-
granddaughter, Jessica
Welstad.
Funeral: 11 a.m.
Wednesday, Dec. 2, at
Our Savior Lutheran
Church, Minot.
Interment: Sunset Me-
morial Gardens, Minot.
Visitation: 3 to 6 p.m.
today, Tuesday, Dec. 1, at
Thompson-Larson Fu-
neral Home, Minot.
Memorials: In lieu of
flowers, memorials are
preferred to Our Savior
Lutheran Church, Minot,
for the Children’s Minis-
try.
