Avis Hanson

Avis Hanson, 88, Jamestown, died Thursday, July 3, 2014, at Ave Maria Village in Jamestown.

Avis Irene (Durward) Hanson was born Dec. 31, 1925, to Rena (Mahnke) and Edward Durward at Kenmare. She grew up in the Kenmare and Palermo area. Avis received a teaching degree at Minot State and taught in Lunds Valley and the Burke County area. Avis married Erling Hanson on June 18, 1950, in Palermo. They made their home in Stanley before moving to Jamestown in 1971. Erling passed away in February 2006.

Avis was a full-time homemaker who always put her family first. She was an avid gardener, a talented artist and craftsperson. They were members of Atonement Lutheran Church in Jamestown where she enjoyed helping with quilting. She was a beloved member of our family and will be greatly missed by all.

Avis is survived by: her son Daniel (Diana) Hanson; three daughters, Janice (Tim) Johnson, Cynthia (Melvin) Lien and Brenda (Duane) Thoms; and 11 grandchildren, Nicole Job Schmidt, Nita (Jay) Sherwin, Lynette (Nick) Nagy, Lisa (Chris) Jahner, Adam (Natalie) Johnson, Scott (Crystal) Johnson, Alex Johnson, Ryan Lien, Veronica Lien, Jason (Leah) Thoms and Tyler Thoms. Avis was great-grandmother to 11 great-grandchildren with one more on the way and one great-great-grandchild. She is survived by one sister, Jean (Ron) McCarty; one sister-in-law, Fern Durward; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were: Erling Hanson; her parents; Ed and Rena Durward; and four brothers and one sister-in-law, Dwayne Durward, Westley Durward, John and Julia Durward and Russel Durward.

Funeral Service: Saturday, July 12, at 1 p.m. at Good Shepherd Chapel, Ave Maria Village, Jamestown, with Pastor Scott Block, officiating.

Burial: Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown.

Visitation: Friday, July 11, from 2 to 7 p.m., at Eddy Funeral Chapel, Jamestown.
