Accommodating growth
Tioga opens new school addition

TIOGA – Tioga sixth graders moved into new classrooms in January with the completion of a $23 million construction project at the high school that included a new sixth-grade wing and a gymnasium.
“We really are very happy with it, very proud of it,” said Paul Olson, superintendent at Tioga Public School. “As a school official, I was very excited to see the support for the school.”
In January 2024, district voters approved a 20-year $23.58 million bond issue with 66% support. Some of the funds beyond the building construction went toward new sod and a new sprinkler system at the football field and will go to resurfacing the track. The project is scheduled for completion in June.
Construction began in June 2024. FCI was construction manager on the project, with EAPC working with architectural design.
The high school building now serves grades 6-12.

To help with the transition in January, sixth graders were introduced to the new addition just before Christmas.
“It has six classrooms, so we have room to expand, to add fifth grade when that becomes necessary,” Olson said. “We built for potential growth.”
The move by the sixth graders frees up space in Central Elementary, which has increasingly grown crowded.
“We’re really seeing the growth right now at Central Elementary School, but they’re landlocked. There’s no more room to add on there,” Olson said.
Tioga Public School’s current enrollment is about 525 from kindergarten through high school. Enrollment grew from 238 in 2007-2008 to 482 during the oil boom in 2014-2015. That year, the district built an addition at Central Elementary, which was seeing the bulk of the growth – from 99 students in 2007-2008 to 299 in 2014-2015. That project used the last of the expansion space at the elementary school, so as enrollment began rising again in the past several years, the decision was made to create more space at the high school.

With the relocation of students to the high school, Central Elementary is able to allocate one of the former sixth-grade classrooms to the English language learner program. That teacher previously had space located in a hallway, Olson said. A second sixth-grade classroom has been converted for use by the school counselor for various classes and seminars.
Also with the move, sixth graders now have access to art classes. The high school has an art teacher, while the elementary does not.
The new gymnasium at the high school is used by sixth graders for their physical education classes and as a second sports practice gym. It also is the primary gym for sporting events. The new facility opened with the 2025-2026 basketball season.
“We also have our district office over here now,” Olson added. “We have a staff work room and a boardroom.” Additionally, the front lobby and restrooms were renovated.
A grand opening was held to give the community a look at the new facility.

One of six new classrooms at Tioga Public School has been in use by sixth graders since January.
“We’ve gotten very, very positive responses for the project. People have been very happy with it,” Olson said. “It’s been a positive addition to our school and community.”
