Feedlot investigated for improper livestock disposal
A feedlot in rural Ward County is being investigated following reports of improper livestock disposal and other potential violations, according to the Ward County Sheriff’s Department.
Ward County Sheriff Robert Roed reported the investigation began after his office received information about the feedlot’s operations. The feedlot, located northeast of Surrey according to the Roed, is believed to house between 8,000-9,000 head of cattle. Subsequent investigations determined there were livestock being improperly disposed of on the property, with an estimated 200 deceased cattle piled in the open.
A search was then obtained for the property and executed on Thursday, March 5, and the Sheriff’s Department and the Ward County Highway Department removed 472 deceased cattle from an open pit and properly disposed of them according to state law.
North Dakota State statues require livestock to be disposed of within 36 hours through approved methods such as rendering, composting, burning or burial. Roed said the Department of Environmental Quality has also been notified, and an investigation into potential permitting violations is ongoing. A public hearing was held in McHenry County on March 3, according to Roed, regarding the feed lot operation and potential water pollution reaching Buffalo Lodge Lake.
Roed said further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses
