City establishes bad check fee

The City of Minot plans to establish a fee on bad checks.

Finance Director David Lakefield told the Minot City Council Monday, Dec. 15, that the city currently isn’t charging. However, the city’s bank will begin charging $16 for checks that can’t be cashed. It is estimated the city will incur $11,000 in bank fees in 2026. Imposing a $35 fee would generate $19,250 to offset the bank fees and associated administrative costs.

Council member Mike Blessum was hesitant about the $35 fee, citing situations in which residents might be struggling financially. Council member Rob Fuller asked about the possibility of a reduced fee or one-time waiver, focusing higher fees on repeat offenders.

Mayor Mark Jantzer recommended imposing the $35 fee and then reviewing how it is working once implemented. The council voted 6-0 to adopt the recommendation.

Starting at $2.99/week.
