Most charges dismissed in apartment fire

Most of the charges filed against a New Town man accused of starting a mobile home fire in August were dismissed following a change of plea.

Choze Joran Morsette, 30, New Town, entered his change of plea in North Central District Court on Sept. 22, pleading guilty to one count of unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia-second offense, a Class C felony. Six counts of endangering by fire or explosion-danger or death or bodily injury, a Class C felony, were dismissed in accordance with the plea agreement.

According to court documents, Morsette was accused of setting a basket of clothes on fire inside an apartment unit on Aug. 25. The fire was extinguished by one of the occupants of the apartment, and Morsette fled the area before police officers arrived. Moresette was located and detained the next day.

Judge Gary Lee sentenced Morsette to five years with the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, to first serve 30 days, with credit for 30 days served. Morsette was also ordered to complete a chemical dependency evaluation along with two years of supervised probation. He also was assessed $525 in court fines and fees.
