Law agencies apprehend suspect in Spirit Lake theft
FORT TOTTEN — The Spirit Lake Tribe, in collaboration with the Bureau of Indian Affairs Fort Totten Police Department and several partner agencies, has confirmed the apprehension of a second suspect in an incident that occurred Thursday, Oct. 2.
The suspect was identified as Winfield Chaske III.
The incident involved a stolen vehicle that led to a crash within the Spirit Lake Reservation. At about 6:53 p.m. Thursday, BIA Law Enforcement received a report of a stolen vehicle driven into the tribe’s exterior boundaries. Shortly after, law enforcement arrived at the scene of a single-vehicle crash near St. Michael. The investigation identified two male suspects, with one cooperating with authorities early in the process.
After an extensive search facilitated by multiple law enforcement agencies, including the North Dakota Highway Patrol and Benson County Sheriff’s Office, Chaske was apprehended within the tribal boundaries at about 1 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4. All evidence related to the case has been collected, and there is currently no active threat to the community, the tribe stated in a release Saturday.
