Bus driver charged with DUI
A bus driver transporting high school students from Minot Air Force Base to school in Minot was arrested Wednesday, Aug. 21, for driving under the influence, according to the Ward County Sheriff’s Office.
Capt. Jason Kraft said the sheriff’s office received multiple reports from concerned citizens and base officers at Minot AFB near one of the gates who observed erratic driving behavior. No one was injured in the incident, and the students were transferred to a separate bus.
Kraft identified the driver as Tomas Podolski, 65, who has been charged with DUI. Kraft said additional charges are pending as the investigation into the incident continues.
A statement from Minot Public Schools Superintendent Scott Faul confirmed Podolski was driving the bus as an employee of Northland Bus Services, which has the contract to transport MPS students living on Minot AFB. Faul said Podolski is no longer employed by Northland Bus.
“The safety of our students is of utmost importance to Minot Public Schools and Northland Bus Services,” Faul said in a statement to The Minot Daily News. “For the interim the Minot Public Schools Transportation Department is taking over the specific route related to this incident. Minot Public Schools along with Northland Bus Services will be reviewing communication and safety protocols. We are thankful for those that contacted MAFB Security Forces and their prompt response to get the bus stopped.”
