VELVA – A storm that blew through Velva early in the morning on July 27 left havoc in its wake.
Sheldon Banglien was anticipating starting over on a house addition that was nearing completion before high winds demolished much of the structure, leaving one board impaled into the ground nearby and another embedded into the front of the house. Traces of home insulation were scattered across the yard.
“We just heard a big crashing sound,” Banglien said of what he called a short-lived storm, which hit about 5 a.m. It took down a basketball hoop and tree branches, along with his house addition.
“It’s just sickening,” he said, looking at the damage that evening. “It’s overwhelming.”
In downtown Velva, the wind did damage at Dokken’s Automotive, including tearing up the roof and filling the surrounding streets and neighborhood with insulation.
Meanwhile, the city park was littered with tree branches and even had trees broken over or uprooted. A number of residents were cleaning up yards as tree branches were down in various parts of town.
