Discovery Center announces new director
The Magic City Discovery Center has announced the appointment of Matthew Farnsworth as its new executive director. Farnsworth officially assumed his role on July 17.
A passionate advocate for lifelong learning and creative discovery, Farnsworth brings a strong background in organizational leadership, instructional design and educational innovation to his new role, according to MCDC information.
Farnsworth, who has worked in both nonprofit and higher education spaces, holds a Master of Science in organizational performance and workplace learning from Boise State University, along with dual graduate certificates in instructional design and workplace performance improvement. He also earned his Bachelor of Arts in communication studies from California State University, Long Beach.
His connection to discovery centers and science museums began personally, through a family membership gifted early in his parenting journey.
“That first pass to a science museum had a tremendous impact on our entire family,” Farnsworth said in a news release. “Since then, my wife and I have made science museums a part of our travels and everyday life. Last year, when my children visited the Magic City Discovery Center, my 4 year old called it ‘the best place my mom has ever taken me.’ That stuck with me.”
That spark of inspiration now comes full circle as Farnsworth steps into this leadership role. His professional background includes developing staff training programs at Boise State University and Elavon, managing creative campaigns for clients at Upslope Media and Adbay, and teaching music and personal development skills to youth. He is also a seasoned facilitator and mentor with a deep commitment to community service.
“Matthew brings not only a wealth of experience in learning and performance, but also a genuine passion for inspiring children and families. His energy, creativity, and leadership will be key as we continue to grow and expand our impact throughout the region,” MCDC Board President Allan Pearson said.
