A Minot man has been granted a suspended sentence after pleading guilty in two cases involving the theft of property from vehicles and the theft of a vehicle in Minot last year.
Joran Daniel Carlson, 32, Minot, entered a change of plea in North Central District Court on July 24, pleading guilty to two counts of theft-take-$1,000-$10,000 and unlawful entry into a vehicle-commit crime, all Class C felonies.
According to the affidavits of probable cause, Minot Central Dispatch received a report of the theft of two Bose aviation headsets, valued together at about $2,100, from the victim's vehicle the morning of Sept. 6, 2024. Carlson was identified in surveillance video opening the doors of vehicles in an apartment complex parking lot. The affidavit noted Carlson was under investigation for multiple auto burglaries and theft offenses, and his appearance and methods were well known to law enforcement at the time.
On Nov. 11, 2024, Minot Police investigated a report from the owner of a 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe stating the vehicle had been stolen from the parking lot of a southwest Minot apartment building. The Kelly Blue Book value of the vehicle was estimated between $4,767-$6,086.
The next day, a friend of the owner observed the stolen vehicle parked at another apartment complex and reported it to police. As officers responded to the location, the suspect drove away in the vehicle and was identified as Carlson by an individual who was outside speaking with him before police arrived.
District Judge Richard Hagar gave Carlson a concurrent sentence of five years with the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, with five years suspended pending the completion of three years of supervised probation.
Carlson was ordered to have no contact with the victims and to maintain a 150 foot distance. Restitution in the cases has been reserved for 60 days, and Carlson was assessed $1,050 in court fines and fees.
