Animal shelter to Host 5K Color Run and Festival

The Souris Valley Animal Shelter is set to host a 5K Color Run/Walk/Roll and Lend-a-Paw Festival on Saturday, Aug. 9, at Oak Park in Minot.

The event will run from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., and is designed to raise awareness of mental health and recognize the important role pets, service dogs and emotional support animals play in supporting human well-being, according to Souris Valley Animal Shelter information.

Open to participants of all ages and abilities, the 5K invites runners, walkers and those using mobility aids to take part in the colorful event. The Minot Police Department will also participate, bringing its bomb squad and therapy K9s to interact with attendees and share demonstrations and stories of their service.

The Lend-a-Paw Festival portion of the day will offer pet-centered activities and opportunities for the public to learn more about animal adoption, fostering and ways to support the shelter’s mission.

Souris Valley Animal Shelter has served the region since 1978, recently expanding its operations with a new veterinary clinic and the acquisition of Minot’s city pound contract. The shelter provides care for animals who are abandoned, lost or surrendered, many of whom require immediate medical attention and temporary housing.

Proceeds from the event will go directly toward supporting shelter operations. Donations help cover the cost of essential supplies such as food, litter, collars, toys, blankets and crates. They also fund critical veterinary care, including vaccinations, spay and neuter surgeries, microchipping, flea and tick treatment, dental cleanings and emergency procedures.

In addition to housing animals on-site, the shelter supports a network of foster families by providing them with all the supplies they need. A community pet pantry also helps local residents in financial distress care for their pets.

Shelter staff said events like the Lend-a-Paw Festival are not only key fundraising opportunities, but also important in encouraging new foster sign-ups and expanding public awareness of the shelter’s work. They report an urgent need for more foster homes in the area.
