Youth Fire Camp teaches lifelong skills

Youth attending the Youth Fire Camp hosted by the Minot Fire Department and surrounding stations Monday-Wednesday, July 7-9, will be learning lifelong skills.

“We already have 20 campers signed up and are completely full,” said Sarah Potts, a firefighter.

Each day, the campers will learn new skills that will further their knowledge of fire and emergency medical services rescue.

On day one, campers will focus on learning CPR.

“We will have a surprise for the campers after CPR training that we are excited for,” Potts said. After the surprise, lunch will be provided.

In the afternoon, campers will get to speak to the ambulance crew to get a better idea what they do on a daily basis.

“After the ambulance crew is done speaking, the campers will have the opportunity to tour the ambulance and learn how firefighters can assist the ambulance crew in an emergency,” Potts said.

On day two, campers will be divided into four groups of five.

“We will have stations set up on Saturday that campers will rotate through within their groups,” Potts said. “The stations will include auto extractions/Jaws of Life, fire attack, search and rescue, and ropes and rappelling,” Potts said.

On the final day, the campers will put everything they learned into practice.

“Sunday morning, campers will focus on practicing for our firefighter rodeo that will be held that afternoon,” Potts said.

Each team will compete for the fastest time and will be awarded prizes accordingly. Family and friends are welcome to come to the rodeo to see what the campers have learned. A catered lunch will follow the rodeo.

“There will also be an awards ceremony after lunch,” Potts said.

“The goal of our camp is to provide campers with lifelong skills that they can take with them anywhere. Even if they don’t pursue emergency services as a career, these are still useful skills to have in their life. And for those that are interested, we hope to see you back at camp next year,” Potts said.

Starting at $2.99/week.
