Tiger cubs make public debut at Minot zoo

Gender reveal held, naming planned

Zoya, Roosevelt Park Zoo’s female Amur tiger, and her quartet of cubs made their debut on Wednesday in the Amur River Valley Tiger Day Room, according to zoo information.

The Amur tiger cubs, who were born May 19 at the Minot zoo and weighed only 3 pounds, currently weigh more than 12 pounds.

According to zoo information, tiger cubs are completely dependent on their mother when born and they have been bonding closely behind-the-scenes since their birth. Over the past few weeks, the cubs have grown stronger and more active and are now able to maneuver over the inside den thresholds and navigate their environment, an important milestone to achieve before their summer debut. For the well-being of the cubs and Zoya, the tigers will have access to both the day room and coinciding den. Viewing schedules will be determined by the tigers, allowing them to choose to be in the day room or in their cozy bed in the room next door.

On Tuesday, with the help of the Minot Park Board, the Roosevelt Park Zoo held a gender reveal to announce the genders of the Amur tiger cubs. The cubs include two males and two females.

The staff at the Roosevelt Park Zoo are seeking help from the community in naming the four cubs through one of the many employee initiatives raising funds for conservation. Opportunities to name the cubs will be announced at a later date.

The official names chosen by the winners will be announced at the Zoo’s World Tiger Day Celebration on Tuesday, July 29.

Starting at $2.99/week.
