Defendant charged for offenses against minor
A Minot woman has been charged with two felonies and two misdemeanors for alleged sexual offenses against a minor.
Samantha Jaymes Vaile, 34, Minot, made her initial appearance in North Central District Court on Thursday, to face two Class C felony counts of corruption of a minor-victim over 15 and luring minors by computer-believes victim 15-17; and two Class A misdemeanor counts of sexual assault-offensive contact and indecent exposure-any electronic means to minor.
According to court documents, Minot Police Department received a report on July 16, 2024, from the victim and the victim’s mother alleging Vaile had sexually assaulted the victim in April 2024. The victim told police Vaile had exerted pressure to enter a sexual relationship and threatened to harm herself if the victim told anyone about it.
The victim’s phone and social media chat messages were provided to investigators. According to court documents, some of the messages between Vaile and the victim had been deleted per her instruction, but several videos and images sent by Vaile were recovered.
Vaile messaged the victim’s phone while it was in the custody of the Minot Police Department, stating a juvenile witness had turned their phone over to police after recording a conversation with her while she was intoxicated, in which she said she “had done things” with the victim.
In an interview with law enforcement on July 31, 2024, Vaile stated she had hardly spoken with the victim. She said she told the juvenile witness she and the victim had sex to make the juvenile witness mad. Vaile further stated she only spoke to the victim when she was intoxicated, and that any inappropriate images were sent accidentally or unknowingly and were intended for her boyfriend. Vaile said everything alleged against her was while she was intoxicated and could not remember if they occurred or not.
The affidavit includes statements from two juvenile witnesses and Vaile’s boyfriend, who shared information contradicting Vaile’s assertions that she was never alone with the victim, did not have sexual contact with the victim and unknowingly engaged in sexual communications with them.
