A Minot social club for adults with developmental disabilities is celebrating its 50th anniversary on Friday with an open house from 4-6 p.m.

2nd Story was founded in the spring of 1975 to provide a place for those with disabilities where they could foster social connections and engage with their community. Around 360 people in Minot take part in a variety of events each week, including recreational activities, events and social opportunities.

2nd Story’s facility offers its members a gathering space for its every popular bingo nights, pool tables, computers and a full kitchen. Its offerings aren’t limited to fun and games, as it has also provided a variety of classes from the North Dakota Center for Persons with Disabilities covering topics to foster independence for its members, along with multiple opportunities for them to engage with service projects and volunteerism in the Minot community.

Executive Director Greg Gordon said the celebration reflects five decades of friendship, inclusion and the community’s unwavering support, which allowed every member to explore new experiences, build interpersonal skills and make social connections.

“2nd Story has been a place for adults with developmental disabilities seeking a space where their voices are heard and where lasting relationships are formed,” Gordon said. “This anniversary is more than just a commemoration – it is a tribute to the members, our past and present board and staff, and supporters who have made this journey with us.”

The club’s initial location was on First Street Southwest, but eventually made its home in the basement of 11b South Main.

“That was when Walter and Becky Piehl started Artmain and became our new landlord. They were generous to us by keeping the rent low while we were there, and that helped us establish ourselves, and we thank them for that,” Gordon said.

After Mike and Dorothy Dolan started an endowment for 2nd Story in 2005, the organization was able to move to its present location at 13 1st Ave. SW.

Starting at $2.99/week.
