Berthold man shares history of family heirloom

A nearly 200-year-old grandfather clock that was shipped from Norway to the late Gilbert Skinningsrud at Berthold many years ago is displayed in The Heritage House at the Scandinavian Heritage Park in Minot.
The Heritage House contains many Scandinavian artifacts.
Ole Skinningsrud, of Berthold, donated the 1832 family heirloom to the Scandinavian Heritage Association several months ago. He is the son of the late Gilbert and Alma Skinningsrud. Gilbert Skinningsrud homesteaded in Carpio Township, Ward County, in the Berthold-Carpio area.
According to Ole Skinningsrud, the grandfather clock that has been in his family for years, was made in Hedalen, Vladres, Norway, where his father’s family farmed.
He said a relative built the cabinet for the clock and the clock’s mechanism came from Germany. “There’s a mate (to the clock) in Germany in a museum,” Skinningsrud said he was told.

“It’s an interesting old clock,” he added.
A painting of the Skinningsrud family farm in Norway hangs next to the grandfather clock in The Heritage House. Skinningsrud said an area artist did the painting from photographs of the family farm. Skinningsrud, his late brother Paul and late sister Thelma all visited the farm in Norway.
Skinningsrud said he donated the items so visitors to the Scandinavian Heritage Park and The Heritage House can enjoy the grandfather clock and painting as much as his family has.
The Heritage House will close for the season on Tuesday, Oct. 1, at 4 p.m.
