Sixth Avenue intersection to close starting Aug 6
As part of the ongoing efforts to improve the infrastructure and flood protection measures in Minot, the Sixth Avenue Northeast intersection on Eighth Street will be closed to through traffic starting Aug. 6. This closure is anticipated to be in place until Sept. 6.
The Sixth Avenue Northeast intersection will be fully closed, with traffic rerouted via Fourth Street Northeast and Eighth Avenue Northeast. During this period, Fifth Avenue Northeast will remain closed to through traffic starting at Third Street from the west.
Access to local businesses and residences will be maintained. Another update to the traffic control route will be provided prior to school starting, as the closure does impact the traffic flow around Roosevelt School. Signage will be in place to guide motorists through the detour routes and ensure smooth traffic flow around the construction zone.
The closure of the Sixth Avenue intersection is part of the larger Phase MI-5 Northeast Tieback Levee Project. This phase includes the construction of earthen levees, arterial road changes, a dry stormwater pond, floodwalls, a city greenway feature, and a stormwater pump station. Once completed, this project will connect with the first four phases of the MREFPP and provide long-term flood protection to Minot, protecting about 60% of residents from the proposed FEMA floodplain, including offering protection from a flood event similar to the record flood of 2011 plus three feet of freeboard.
