Four-day sentence for unlawful entry

A Minot man has been sentenced to serve four days with the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation after entering a change of plea to guilty to a single charge of unlawful entry into a vehicle to commit a crime, a Class C felony.

Terry Lee James Jr., 25, Minot, entered his change of plea in North Central District Court on Wednesday, which stemmed from charges related to an incident from June 6.

According to court documents, a Minot Police officer responded to the area near the 800 block of University Avenue after a caller reported a man walking and stumbling into a garbage can. The officer was advised that Minot State University Security was following the person.

The officer made contact with the man, who identified himself as James. MSU security informed the officer they had observed James enter a vehicle in the MSU parking lot and remove some items, which were located in a backpack he was carrying after he consented to a search. The stolen items included jumper cables for a battery booster pack and a prescription pill bottle. The vehicle’s owner was contacted to confirm the items belonged to them, and James was placed under arrest.

District Judge Stacy Louser sentenced James to serve four days of a two-year sentence with the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, with credit for four days already served. James was ordered to complete two years of supervised probation and a chemical dependency evaluation, and to pay $525 in court fines and fees.

Starting at $2.99/week.
