Velva graduates reflect on high school career

VELVA – Keela Karow and Kaylee Tomlinson are the top two students of the graduating class at Velva High School. The graduation ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the school.

Karow, daughter of Amanda Weidler and Keith Karow, is the valedictorian of the 2024 graduating class. This fall she plans to attend the University of North Dakota to study nursing.

Throughout her high school career she has been involved in golf, softball and volleyball and said her favorite memories were made with her classmates at sporting events, homecomings and prom.

“Always put forth your best effort. Always come to school, even if you don’t feel like it and always know that at the end of the day everything’s going to be okay,” Karow said.

Salutatorian Kaylee Tomlinson, daughter of Tim and Maureen Tomlinson, is heading to North Dakota State College of Science to pursue a career in dental hygiene. She said she had always wanted to go into a health-related field but knew she didn’t want to be a nurse.

“It feels like a relief. I thought it would take forever but it eventually made its way and now that I look back it went by pretty fast,” Tomlinson said.

Tomlinson’s favorite memories were made during extracurriculars like FFA, volleyball, basketball and track. Of specific memories, she said the senior boys winning the annual muscle volleyball match was among the top.

When asked what advice she would give younger students, Tomlinson said, “Stop saying, ‘I can’t wait to get to different stages.’ In elementary it was ‘I can’t wait to be in high school.’ Just take it all in and don’t stress about the things that won’t matter later on.”

The graduates are: McKie Anderson-Gilbert, Anthony Biddinger, Taryn Braaten, Stella Campbell, Lauryn Chadwick, Colton Charnetzki, Olivia Clark, Cienna Clemens, Wyatt Dove, Patrick Effertz, Wyatt Fischer, Bailie Hudkins, Keelah Karow, Hailee Kvamme, Ciarra Lenoir, Alexia Maier, Kelson Mascol, Olivia Miller, Natalie Nechiporenko, Lucas Siebuhr and Kaylee Tomlinson.
