Mezzotint exhibition on display at Northwest Arts Center

Submitted Photo “Grand Entry Woman” is a mezzotint with applied earth pigments.

The Northwest Arts Center at Minot State University is displaying “Grand Entry” by artist and printmaker Linda Whitney. The collection of mezzotint prints celebrates indigenous culture and traditional dance.

Whitney has loved Native American culture since she was a child and her late husband was a traditional powwow dancer and announcer, which has heavily inspired her work.

“The celebration of the powwow is a declaration of the strength and tenacity of the indigenous cultures of this continent,” Whitney said. “The beautiful regalia is a testament to the history and creativity of the people. The drum beat accompanies the dancers and is felt in one’s chest is also considered the heart beat of Mother Earth. The songs are the oral history of the people.”

Whitney’s images are printed from hand-rocked copper plates and are painted with natural pigments collected from nature.

Whitney’s mezzotints have been to more than 400 exhibitions at locations in North America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Serbia, Bulgaria, Nicaragua, Russia, India and China.

A closing reception and online viewing will be held on Thursday, April 25, from 6:30-8 p.m. Whitney will give a virtual artist’s talk at 7 p.m. from her Valley City studio.

The exhibition will be on display at the Northwest Arts Center until Thursday, April 25.
