Bill would help fund presidential library

The Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library Act, legislation that would support the construction of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library (TRPL) in Medora, was introduced this week by Rep. Kelly Armstrong, Senators John Hoeven and Kevin Cramer, all R-ND, and three other congressional members.

The act would authorize funding for the library’s continued construction and go toward ensuring the preservation of President Theodore Roosevelt’s history and legacy.

“As President Roosevelt proudly claimed, he would not have ascended to the presidency had it not been for North Dakota. Fittingly, we are honored that our state should house the institution dedicated to preserving his legacy,” stated the N.D. congressional delegation.

“With the approval of this legislation, Congress will help ensure that the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library will be a beacon of inspiration, reminding us all of the values of conservation, leadership, and courage that define our national character,” said Theodore ‘Ted’ Roosevelt V, the great-great-grandson of President Theodore Roosevelt.

“Building on the substantial and essential investments from the state of North Dakota and private donors, this legislation represents a historic opportunity to honor President Roosevelt’s legacy and inspire future generations to embody his values of conservation, leadership and public service,” said Gov. Doug Burgum.

If passed, the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library Act would authorize the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library Foundation to enter into interagency agreements aimed at preserving and exhibiting federal curatorial collections associated with Theodore Roosevelt that are currently in storage. It would also enable the Department of the Interior to provide funding to the foundation, contingent on the foundation raising twice the matching funds from non-federal sources. Federal funds allocated under the act would not be utilized for the maintenance or operation of the Library.
