Anhydrous tank owners urged to check manufacturer details

BISMARCK – Anhydrous ammonia nurse tank owners are urged to check the manufacturer and manufacture date of their nurse tanks after a safety advisory was issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration about the possibility of catastrophic tank failure. Tanks made by the American Welding and Tank (AWT) Company in Fremont, Ohio, between Jan. 1, 2007, and Dec. 31, 2011, have had integrity issues with the welding and may rupture.

“If your tank fits this description, please have your tank inspected and cleared before use as they have had continuing problems and have catastrophically ruptured in the past,” Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring said.

The safety features on all anhydrous ammonia nurse tanks should be checked regularly to ensure they haven’t expired, and all required safety equipment should be readily available.
