MPS releases statement after basketball incident

The administrators of Minot Public Schools have released a statement regarding an incident at a recent basketball game between Minot High and Bismarck High School.

Superintendent Mark Vollmer said in the statement that administration was notified by a Bismarck parent that potentially discriminatory conduct was engaged in by multiple MPS students in the cheering section.

“Immediate action was taken by administration at the game to address the student section. Since then, we have worked to investigate further and, unfortunately, can establish that a handful of MPS students did engage in inappropriate and/or racially insensitive conduct,” Vollmer’s statement read.

Vollmer said a thorough investigation into the incident as well as a review of the district’s Nondiscrimination and Anti-Harassment Policy will be conducted and those involved will be held accountable if the alleged conduct is substantiated.

“MPS understands that disciplinary consequences are not enough. We will work to further educate our student body and will be considering other appropriate actions to take to help the school community as a whole learn from this and do better moving forward.” Vollmer’s statement concluded. “To the Bismarck High players, coaches, fans and community, please accept our apologies and know that we are taking this seriously. We desire to work with Bismarck Public Schools to address the impact this may have caused.”

Vollmer encouraged anyone to report any other concerns immediately so they can be properly addressed.
