Minot airport impacted during latest cold snap
During the recent cold snap, the Minot airport and its airlines have faced their share of troubleshooting. Some of those issues created passenger travel delays.
“My understanding is a lot of the delays over the weekend had to do with some challenges with the equipment necessary for deicing the planes,” City Manager Harold Stewart told the Minot City Council Tuesday. “That is under the auspices of the airline and the contractors to be able to do that. Our city staff does not do that.”
The airport’s responsibility was to ensure the airport, its runways, tarmacs and mechanical equipment remained operational, which they did, he said.
“What we’ve been able to control and fix, we’ve been very proactive in trying to get that taken care of as quickly as we can,” he said.
Airport Manager Jennifer Eckman said the airport’s fuel pump at its fuel farm failed on Sunday and remained inoperable as of Tuesday evening. Contractors worked on the pump and thought they had it operational Tuesday afternoon. When it did not operate, Eckman said, they then discovered a pump part that appeared to need an emergency replacement.
While those repairs are being worked on, those airplanes needing to refuel have been loading passengers in Minot and flying to Bismarck for fuel before going on to their destinations, she said.
Also, pipe breaks were discovered in the lower level of the terminal building Tuesday evening. Eckman said repairs were scheduled for Wednesday.
