Uncooperative Williston man arrested on active warrants
WILLISTON – A Williston man has been arrested after a routine traffic stop evolved into an active incident shortly before noon on Tuesday.
A Williston Police Department officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on an individual riding a bicycle, as it had been determined the man resembled an individual believed to have active warrants. The suspect reportedly fled from officers and entered a residence in the 900 block of Third Avenue West in Williston.
Police identified the suspect as Travis Lee Cortner, 47, Williston, who was wanted on outstanding warrants for contempt of court and was noted to have a history of uncooperative and unsafe interactions with law enforcement.
Through Northwest Crisis Negotiations and additional assets requested to assist police, all efforts to encourage Cortner to leave the residence were unsuccessful. With all other options exhausted, authorities made entry into the residence and took Cortner into custody without further incident.
Charges are currently pending with the Williams County State’s Attorney’s Office, with no hearing scheduled in district court at this time. The incident is still under investigation.
