Meet the midwives of Minot

Midwives serve as advocates for their patients

Submitted Photos Erica Riordan and Jayme Burman are the only two midwives at Trinity Hospital in Minot.

For more than a decade, both Erica Riordan and Jayme Burman have offered their expertise in the field of midwifery. Being the only two midwives at Trinity Hospital in Minot, their unique services sometimes go undiscovered. They want to make sure expecting mothers know they are here to help along every step of the way.

The two have a great amount of passion for what they do and the people they aid. When asked why, Riordan said, “You get to positively impact people in some of the most vulnerable moments of their life. You are there for the best moments and their worst moments.”

Throughout the years they have built strong relationships with many mothers and given them much needed physical and mental support throughout the whole process.

Since the end of the pandemic, more and more mothers seem to be seeking out Burman and Riordan’s help to facilitate a safe pregnancy for both them and their babies. The two hope to build relationships and assist even more expecting mothers with whatever they may need.

Even so, there seems to still be misconceptions with the public on what a midwife does and how they practice.

“We’re like a team with women. We’re here to support their decisions and give them evidence-based recommendations. They get to know us, and we get to know them,” Burman said.

The two take on many roles but say they have become like advocates for their patients and developed strong intuition to know when something is off.

“Once you build that relationship, you can tell when something’s off. Our body is interesting. Everything is so connected between our minds, body and organs,” Riordan said.

The two take turns being on call and say it works better that way with the increasing number of patients. Burman and Riordan hope to continue to help even more mothers in Minot.

“We’re just here to support.” Burman said.
