Hayden Fredrickson

Hayden Fredrickson is a top student at Minot High School, this fall he will be attending Harvard University to study government and economics on a pre-law track.

Athea Panales

Fredrickson is the son of Steve and Darcy Fredrickson, who are both now retired. His father worked at Hess as an engineer for 30 years and his mother worked for ND Child Support in Williston before they moved to Minot. His older brother, Tyler, is a park ranger at Fort Stevenson.

“My favorite memory of high school is probably finals time last year,” Fredrickson said, “My junior year was very stressful, but I had some of my favorite teachers. Finishing those tests and then getting to hang out with my teachers for a little bit and going to breakfast with friends after a was really fun and relieving experience, even if it’s a pretty small thing.”

Fredrickson is highly involved in the community. During high school he’s been in the Minot Area Council of the Arts Youth Advisory Committee and has played in the Minot City Orchestra, Minot City Band, and the Minot Brass Band. This year he’s also been an intern with the Minot City Manager’s Office.

“The first thing I would tell my five-year-old me is to be true to myself and be unapologetically passionate,” said Fredrickson, “I got very caught up in doing things to prove myself to others in some way, whether that’s to my friends or to college admissions counselors. If you just be yourself and pursue your passions with all the energy you can put in, you’ll end up where you want to be.”

Athea Panales

Athea Panales is a top student of the graduating class at Minot High School. This fall she will be attending the University of North Dakota on a pre-optometry track.

Panales’s family immigrated from the Philippines ten years ago. Her parents are both nurses at Trinity Health. She has two siblings; one is about to start medical school and the other is studying to become an art teacher.

Panales’s favorite memory from high school was reuniting with old friends from her time in middle school and becoming closer to them again. Outside of school she is involved with her church, Eagle’s Wings. She sings and plays piano on the worship team, and she plans to join clubs and organizations where she can serve and give back to the community at UND.

“If I could go back in time to when I was five years old, I would tell her that everything works out. I worry a lot about the future, and it hinders me from staying in the present,” said Panales, “I ask myself, ‘What if this happens or that happens, and what if it doesn’t work out?’ But if I change the perspective and ask myself instead, ‘What if it does work out?’ then I am less likely to try and change the end result of something that has not happened yet. I can only stay in this moment now, tomorrow will worry for itself.”
