School board approves bids

The Minot School Board accepted bid openings for the Magic City Campus Science Renovation and the Minot North Athletic Complex at their regular meeting on Wednesday.

Both bids were submitted by SLW/Ackerman-Estvold: $1,236,283.05 for the MCC Science Renovation and $11,324,139.45 for the North Campus Stadium project.

“These bids were introduced the day of the last board meeting, and we are relatively pleased with the bids coming in. It seems like the inflation wall is not reversing a lot, but it at least stabilized,” Vollmer said, “We will be asking for a limited authorization to proceed primarily so we can start getting materials ordered that are necessary for the completion of those projects.”

After some discussion of the figures and other information regarding the bids, Vollmer said that quick action would be prudent, given the long wait for certain components and infrastructure like switches and cabinetry which require time to line up and acquire. It was eventually moved and approved by the board for a limited authorization for both bids to get the ball rolling.

The board also considered staff resignations for the upcoming 2023-24 school year. Seven total resignations were submitted to the board by business education instructor Benjamin Berg, social studies teacher Lauren Shields, math interventionist Marilyn Calo, kindergarten teacher Samantha Blessum, sixth-grade science teacher Megan Cwiakala, kindergarten teacher Roxanne Daeley, and first-grade teacher Shelbi Lawson. All seven resignations were recommended and approved by the board.

Open enrollments for Minot Air Force Base were reviewed and approved by the board, leading to the final discussion over the hiring of a new staff member to teach a CDL class. The CDL course is set to debut in the fall, and will include time spent in the classroom, simulators, and on the road.

“One of the courses is the CDL, which will be one of the big components of the Minot Area Workforce Academy,” said Assistant Superintendent Kim Slotsve, “We have two simulators coming for CDL as well as a tractor trailer. We have students enrolled in that class, so I’m coming to ask for a teacher to get that program up and running.”

The request was ultimately approved. Before the meeting, the board stopped by Roosevelt Elementary for a special board visit. The tour of Roosevelt took a little longer than expected, necessitating Vollmer to request that the planned discussion for the MPS Realignment Project’s planning schedule be moved to a special board meeting to be scheduled for next Monday.
