Minot man’s death in May 2022 ruled accidental drowning

The Ward County Sheriff’s Department has announced the May 2022 death of a Minot man found in the Souris River was an accidental drowning.

Ashlan Garcia, 20, Minot, had been reported missing on April 18, 2022, leaving his home without his cell phone and wallet according to police. On May 27, 2022, a body was discovered in the Souris River by kayakers, which was eventually identified as Garcia. Investigators didn’t suspect foul play at the time, but had Garcia’s body sent to the State Medical Examiner for official identification and to determine cause of death. Eight months later the Ward County Sheriff’s Department received the official report from the State Examiner, which determined the cause and manner of death to be accidental drowning.
