Minot Memorial Day observances set for Monday

The annual Minot Memorial Day observance will take place on Monday, May 30, beginning at the Eighth Street Northwest bridge. The event starts at 8 a.m. and consists of the strewing of flowers in the Souris River to represent and honor veterans lost at sea.

At 10:30 a.m. another program will be held at Rosehill Memorial Park. The observance will feature a procession of veteran motorcycle riders and a Memorial Day address by retired Maj. Trygve Hammer, U.S. Marine Corps Reserve.

Hammer graduated from Velva High School in 1985 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. The next year he was nominated by the Secretary of the Navy and appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. He graduated in 1990 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps. Hammer completed flight training at Naval Air Training Command in Pensacola, Florida, and was designated a naval aviator in September 1992.

He completed two fleet tours as a CH-53D Sea Stallion helicopter pilot, a deployment as a forward air controller with Third Battalion, Third Marines, and an assignment as a company officer and leadership instructor at the U.S. Naval Academy. He left active duty for the Marine Corps Reserves in June 2001. His Marine Corps Reserve career included completing a combat deployment to Iraq in 2003.

When not engaged in Marine Corps Reserve duties, he was an airline pilot, a defense contractor and a security consultant. Hammer retired from the Marine Corps Reserve in 2010 and returned to Velva in 2016. Currently, he is the commandant of the John M. Joyce Detachment #1445 of the Marine Corps League and a member of the Velva American Legion Post 39.
