Darrell Schiff, Minot, charged with felonious restraint, other offenses

Darrell Wayne Schiff, 34, Minot, is charged in district court in Minot with Class C felony felonious restraint of an adult victim, Class C felony reckless endangerment with extreme indifference, Class C felony fleeing a peace officer, Class C felony preventing arrest, Class A misdemeanor criminal mischief, Class A misdemeanor reckless endangerment involving domestic violence, and Class A misdemeanor under the influence while in actual physical control of a motor vehicle, his third offense within seven years. All of the offenses were allegedly committed on Friday.

According to Minot police, an off-duty law enforcement officer spotted a woman being dragged by a vehicle in southwest Minot at about 6:53 p.m. Friday. A Minot patrol sergeant located the vehicle and attempted to initiate a traffic stop near Western Avenue and South Broadway. Schiff, the driver, failed to stop for several blocks. At Eighth Street and West Central Avenue, Schiff stopped and then intentionally backed into the patrol car. Schiff then fled and a chase ensued throughout northwest Minot. Schiff was arrested and taken to jail. The woman, who had been in the car, was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Schiff made an initial appearance on the charges on Monday in district court in Minot. A preliminary hearing in the case has been scheduled for May 12 before Judge Todd Cresap. He also made an initial appearance on the charges in Minot Municipal Court and pleaded guilty to two counts of Class B misdemeanor criminal mischief and one count of Class B misdemeanor driving with a suspended or revoked driver’s license. Minot Municipal Court Judge Ashley Beall sentenced him to 30 days in jail, with a requirement that he serve 10 days, and ordered him to pay fines and fees and to complete an anger management class. He can submit proof of alcohol and drug treatment to satisfy the anger management class requirement. Schiff is serving his sentence at the Ward County Jail.
