Christopher Gillette, Twin Buttes, sentenced to 15 years on federal charges
Christopher Lewis Gillette, 35, Twin Buttes, was sentenced in December to five years in prison, with a concurrent sentence of three years in prison for assault with a deadly weapon and 10 years, consecutive to the sentences on the first two charges, for use of a firearm in relation to a felony violent crime. All of the charges related to a shooting incident on the Fort Berthold Reservation on Aug. 14, 2020.
One man was killed and another man was shot and seriously injured. According to court documents, the victims had hitched a ride with a friend and someone else had given them permission to stay at the residence. Gillette became angry with the group because they were allegedly smoking methamphetamine and came back with a 9 mm handgun in his waistband, pulled the gun and fired.
Judge Daniel Traynor also ordered Gillette to pay restitution of $147,843.19 to the North Dakota Department of Human Services and to have no contact with the surviving victim. He also recommended that Gillette be considered for a drug treatment program while he is in the federal prison system.
