Minot library to offer murder mystery nights

Murder is afoot this fall at the Minot Public Library, which will launch a monthly mystery for adults at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 4 in the north meeting room at the library.

Zhaina Moya, adult services librarian, said there will be room for up to 20 people to sign up to act out mystery characters and investigate. The event is free and intended for adults over 18. People are required to pre-register.

“Who is the killer within the room?” said Moya. “It could be anyone.”

Each participant will be assigned a character — either murderer or suspects — and will be given a script to act out.

“If you’re the murderer, (obviously) keep that a secret,” said Moya.

The event is intended for people ages 18 and up. No kids are allowed, though Moya said the library might put on a more teen friendly murder mystery night in the future.

People who want to dress the part or in Halloween costume will be able to come in character, though that is not required.

Moya said she and her assistant, Kassie Ziegler, will be dressed up.

People who want to dress up can learn their character in advance by calling the library.

The theme for Monday’s murder mystery is Murder at Retribution Manor, a murder that took place in a fancy mansion where no one knows anyone else.

Moya said the library purchased the packets for this murder mystery night and those that will be held in November or December from a company called Broadway Murder Mysteries.

She said the mystery might remind some people of an Agatha Christie novel.

Moya said the library staff surveyed people about what they were most interested in for adult activities and murder mysteries topped the list.
