Brave the Shave to raise funds for kids with cancer

Brave the Shave will hold live events to support families of children with cancer and cancer research.

A fundraiser in Minot is scheduled for Sept. 25 at the IBEW Hall, located at 125 35th Avenue NE in Minot. The event will start at noon. People can register online at: donate.bravetheshave.net/Campaign/2021MinotEvent

Organizers hope to raise $10,000 at the Minot event. As of Sunday, there were $3,720 pledges towards that goal.

Volunteers raise money and have their heads cut or shaved for donated money. Proceeds go to the Brave the Shave Family Fund, which supports families with expenses such as gas cards that help them pay to travel to medical appointments for their children or money to install air filters in their homes and help with other unexpected bills that arise during cancer treatment. The Andrew McDonough Be Positive Foundation to help fund cancer research.

Other events are scheduled throughout the state. A Brave the Shave fundraiser was held in Williston on Saturday. The flagship fundraiser event in Bismarck is scheduled for Sept. 18 at the Bismarck YMCA, with games for kids, bouncy houses and a silent auction. Doors open at noon and the event starts at 1:30 p.m. at the Bismarck event.

Fundraising during the COVID-19 pandemic has been held with virtual events, which has had an impact on how much they have been able to raise.

“We’ve had to postpone almost all of our events,” said Taner Ohlsen, event organizer. “The safety of our children, who are already immunocompromised, is our top priority.”

Families have been making more requests for help from the organization even as overall donations have gone down. Brave the Shave is urging people to make donations or participate in the fundraisers to help meet the increasing need of families of children with cancer.
