Samantha Decoteau sentenced for theft of pickup

Samantha Decoteau, Mandan, was sentenced on Friday to 360 days in jail, all suspended but the 168 days she has already served, and 18 months of supervised probation for stealing a pickup truck from a Minot hotel parking lot on Jan. 22.

Judge Stacy Louser also ordered Decoteau to pay $125 in court costs and to have no contact with the victim. The offense will be deemed a Class A misdemeanor upon successful completion of probation.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed with the court, a man called police to report that his black 2020 Ram 1500 pickup truck had been stolen from the parking lot of the Sierra Inn. The man told police that he had used a transport company to transport the vehicle from Miami, Fla., to Minot and had left instructions for the driver to leave the keys to the vehicle at the front desk of the hotel. When he went to pick up the pickup, it wasn’t there. The truck was valued at $65,000.

Police learned that the driver for the transport company arrived at the Sierra Inn and said he was to drop off the keys for a man. Decoteau was waiting in the lobby and told the driver that she knew the man he was looking for. The driver then handed Decoteau the keys. Decoteau then left. Police reviewed surveillance video and tentatively identified Decoteau. They later located the stolen vehicle on the south side of the Economy Hotel in Minot. They went to a room at the hotel and found Decoteau and placed her under arrest. Decoteau was in possession of keys to the stolen pickup truck.
