Airports continue steady pandemic recovery

North Dakota’s airports saw an increased demand for air travel in May, continuing their steady recovery from the pandemic, according to the North Dakota Aeronautics Commission. Demand has leveled to about 30% below pre-pandemic numbers.

The industry has attributed the recent passenger growth to a recovery in leisure travel that has been ongoing due to warmer weather and a release of pent-up demand.

The state’s eight commercial service airports posted 69,285 airline passenger boardings during May.

The Minot airport recorded 11,046 boardings in May, compared to 1,966 in 2020 and 13,122 in 2019. Year-to-date boardings in Minot total 42,503, up from 36,824 boardings for the same period in 2020 but down from 65,489 boardings in 2019.

Boardings in Dickinson and Williston continue to lag since the pandemic, however. Boardings so far in 2021 are behind 2020 by 17.4% in Dickinson and 39% in Williston.
