Coty Wolverton, Minot, sentenced to 109 days time served, 18 months probation, for breaking man’s face in fight at jail

Coty James Wolverton, 36, Minot, was sentenced on Friday to two years in prison, all suspended but the 109 days he has already served in the Ward County Jail, and 18 months supervised probation forfracturing several bones in another inmate’s face during a fight at the Ward County Jail on July 5. According to the probable cause affidavitfiled with the court,Wolverton and the other man had been engaged in a verbal argument, with the victim on the lower level of the jail pod and Wolverton on the upperlevel. Wolverton is then seen on security footage running down the stairs to the lower level, running up behind the victim and striking him on the right side of the face with his right elbow. Wolverton then is seen grabbing the other man and spinning him around so they were facing each other. Atthat point, bothWolverton and the other man started punching each other and wrestling until the fight was broken up by correctional officers. The victim sought treatment the following day for a swollen jaw and black eye. He was X-rayed and it was discovered he had multiple facial fractures. Judge Richard Hagar also ordered Wolverton to pay $1,100 in court costs and restitution yet to be determined. Wolverton will receive 15 days off his sentence for good behavior in jail.
