Hawaiian day at Trinity Homes

Life during the current coronavirus pandemic, with its mixture of precautions, has been difficult for many. Perhaps that has been no more evident anywhere than it has been for the elderly who have been identified as the most vulnerable to effects of COVID-19.

Trinity Homes of Minot is a care facility that has necessarily followed certain restrictions to help keep coronavirus outside its doors. Like similar facilities throughout the state, that has meant a general loss of contact with loved ones for Trinity Homes residents.

Wednesday though proved to be a welcome change of routine for Trinity Homes residents as they participated in a full day of Hawaiian-themed activities wrapped around a special “luau luncheon.”

“We wanted to have a special day to brighten up the resident’s lives a little bit,” said Wanda Maixner, Trinity Home director of activities and occupational therapy. “They’ve been down in the dumps sometimes with COVID and being isolated from their family and friends.”

Activities included Hawaiian trivia, various Hawaiian-themed word games, Hawaiian music, coconut rolling and a hula hoop arm contest. All of the events seemed to put a smile on the faces of the participants and other residents.

“I think it is a huge success,” said Maixner. “We do some special things with Facetime and Zoom so they can connect with family and friends but, with limited visits, this brightens their day.”
