Coty Wolverton, Minot, charged with fracturing man’s face in jail fight

Coty James Wolverton, 36, Minot, is accused of fracturing several bones in another inmate’s face during a fight at the Ward County Jail on July 5.

Wolverton is charged in district court in Minot with Class C felony aggravated assault.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed with the court, Wolverton and the other man, David Huston, had been engaged in a verbal argument, with the alleged victim on the lower level of the jail pod and Wolverton on the upper level. Wolverton is then seen on security footage running down the stairs to the lower level, running up behind Huston and striking Huston on the right side of the face with his right elbow. Wolverton then is seen grabbing Huston and spinning him around so they were facing each other. At that point, both Wolverton and Huston started punching each other and wrestling until the fight was broken up by correctional officers.

Huston sought treatment the following day for a swollen jaw and black eye. He was X-rayed and it was discovered he had multiple facial fractures.

In court on Wednesday, Wolverton told Judge Richard Hagar that he had been threatened.

Jail records show that Huston is in jail for a violation of probation and Wolverton was in jail for domestic violence

A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for Oct. 8.
