No spike in cases after Memorial weekend

Gov. Doug Burgum said a feared spike in coronavirus cases due to increased activity over the Memorial Day weekend has so far not occurred.

Instead, the numbers of new coronavirus cases seem to show a positive downward trend, said Burgum.

As of Wednesday, there were 2,679 positive cases, with 2,169 recovered. Sixty-six people have died.

The state has also boosted its testing for the virus, with events like a mass testing drive-through event at the North Dakota State Fairgrounds in Minot on Wednesday.

Some people may have been frustrated that the mass testing event was not held earlier, but Burgum said during his regular briefing on Wednesday that Ward County has had low numbers of positive tests and has appeared to be an area of the state where the spread of the virus was under control. Testing for individuals was available at local health providers. Burgum said officials do want to conduct more testing.

The state has also been collaborating with tribal governments representing all five North Dakota tribes to conduct testing on reservations.

Burgum said he has some concern that people who attend ongoing protests over the killing of a black man by a police officer in Minneapolis could result in further spread of the virus. He said people who are participating in a protest should consider wearing a mask and then staying away from loved ones who might be more vulnerable to complications of the virus.
