Parris Hayes Jr., Minot, charged with felon in possession of firearm, possession of stolen firearm

Parris Lashaunt Hayes Jr., 22, is charged in district court in Minot with Class C felony possession of a firearm by a felon and Class C felony possession of a stolen firearm. He is also charged with Class B misdemeanor possession of marijuana.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed with the court, Hayes was stopped at 1:17 a.m. Thursday by a Ward County Sheriff’s Deputy on County Road 17 at the intersection of 16th Avenue SW. The deputy approached the driver’s side window and asked for Hayes’ license, registration and proof of insurance. The deputy wrote that he could smell marijuana coming from the vehicle. Hayes admitted there was marijuana in the car. The deputy asked Hayes to get out of the car and Hayes complied. Hayes reached into his left shorts pocket and retrieved two baggies filled with marijuana. The deputy detained Hayes. A search of the vehicle turned up a handgun in the front seat pocket. Hayes is not permitted to possess a gun because of a felony conviction. The gun had been reported stolen. Hayes told the deputy he got the gun recently and had tried to find out if it was stolen on the internet but was not able to do so.
