David Riley III charged with felony domestic violence

David Riley III, 37, Minot, is accused of strangling a woman during a domestic violence altercation on Monday night. He is charged in district court in Minot with Class C felony domestic violence causing serious bodily injury.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed with the court, they had been drinking and argued when Riley wanted to drive their new car. The woman didn’t want Riley to drive because he had been drinking. He had been in a car accident a few days earlier. When the woman told Riley he couldn’t leave, he started yelling at her. He got on top of her on the bed and started to strangle her for up to 10 seconds while calling her names. She kneed him in the groin and got away from him. She got up and ran and hid the keys to the vehicle. She ran into the bathroom and Riley followed her, pushed her up against the wall and held her there with his hands around her neck. She kicked him again and ran, but Riley caught her outside the bathroom and pushed her against a wall in the hallway, again wrapping his hands around her neck and strangling her. She told Riley the keys were in her purse and he let her go. The woman called police. Riley was in the living room breaking things and looking for the keys just before the police arrived. Children were present in the residence during the altercation.

The woman had a mark on her neck. She was checked out by an ambulance crew but refused transport to the hospital.

Riley had what the police described as defensive wounds on his face that corroborated the woman’s version of events.
